Korea memory firm reportedly cuts 4GB module prices to US$25
A Korea-based memory firm has recently lowered its quotes for 4GB DRAM modules to US$25, with corresponding 4Gb chips quoted at as low as US$2.80, according to industry sources.
The speculation follows previous reports saying that US-based module firm Kingston Technology has lowered quotes for DRAM modules starting August. DRAM demand has been negatively affected by continued sluggish PC sales and disappointing sales of tablets and smartphones since the second half of 2013, prompting chip and module companies to cut prices.
Contract prices for mainstream DRAM modules rose 16% in the second quarter to US$27.25. However, prices have come under downward pressure in the third quarter, due to weaker-than-expected demand.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix continue to allocate more of their capacities to the production of mobile DRAM chips, while lowering their output for PC DRAM products, according to DRAMeXchange.
Mobile DRAM accoutned for 40% of Samsung"s overall DRAM output in the second quarter, while only 20% of its output was for PC DRAM chips, said DRAMeXchange, adding that PC DRAM products accounted for 40% of SK Hynix" total DRAM output in the second quarter. The proportion is expected to fall further to 30% in the second half of 2013, DRAMeXchange noted.
